Turkish Kunefe with Fenugreek and Yellow Cheese
A traditional Turkish dessert made with kunefe pastry, fenugreek, and yellowed cheese, topped with a sweet syrup.
Ingredients
- β1 package kunefe pastryavailable at most Middle Eastern markets
- β1 cup, crumbled yellowed cheeseuse a strong, aged cheese
- β1 tablespoon, ground fenugreekoptional, but adds a nice flavor
- β1 cup sugar
- β1 cup water
- β2 tablespoons lemon juice
- β2 tablespoons butter

Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).

Cut the kunefe pastry into 1-inch squares and place on a baking sheet.

Mix the crumbled cheese, ground fenugreek, and sugar in a bowl.

Brush the butter on the kunefe pastry.

Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture on each piece of pastry.

Fold the pastry in half to enclose the filling.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

While the pastry is baking, mix the water and lemon juice in a saucepan.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

Remove the pastry from the oven and brush with the sweet syrup.

Serve warm, topped with additional syrup if desired.
