Cantonese-Style BBQ Pork Bao
A classic Chinese dish featuring juicy, smoky BBQ pork served in a fluffy bao bun.
Ingredients
- ●1 pound Boneless pork shoulderCured with 5-spice powder
- ●1/2 cup Char siu sauceHomemade or store-bought
- ●4-6 Siu bao bunsFresh or frozen
- ●1 bunch Green onionsChopped for garnish
- ●2 tablespoons Hoisin sauceOptional dipping sauce
- ●2 tablespoons Pork fat or oilFor brushing bao buns
- ● Salt and pepperTo taste
- ●1 tablespoon Five-spice powderFor curing pork

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2. In a small bowl, mix together five-spice powder and salt. Rub the mixture all over the pork shoulder.

3. Place the pork shoulder on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20 minutes.

4. While the pork is baking, prepare the char siu sauce by mixing it with hoisin sauce (if using).

5. Remove the pork from the oven and brush it with the char siu sauce.

6. Increase oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the pork is caramelized.

7. Meanwhile, steam the bao buns according to package instructions.

8. Slice the pork into thin strips and serve with steamed bao buns and chopped green onions.
