Braised Beef in Croatian Dumplings
A hearty and comforting dish featuring tender beef in a rich sauce served with homemade dumplings.
Ingredients
- β2 lbs Beef (2 lbs)Chuck or beef shank work well
- β1 cup All-purpose flouroptional for dumpling coating

- β1/2 cup Breadcrumbspanko or regular

- β2 tbsp Bacon fator vegetable oil

- β1 large Onionchopped

- β2 medium Carrotpeeled and chopped

- β3 cloves Garlicminced

- β1 tsp Saltor to taste

- β1 tsp Black pepperor to taste

- β1 package Dumpling dough (homemade or store-bought)see note
- β1 cup Waterfor dumpling dough

In a large pot, heat the bacon fat over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.

Add the chopped carrot and cook for 5 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Add the beef and cook until browned on all sides.

Add the salt and black pepper. Add enough water to cover the beef.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2 hours, or until the beef is tender.

While the beef is cooking, prepare the dumpling dough according to the package instructions or recipe.

Once the beef is done, remove it from the pot and let it rest.

Bring the cooking liquid to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.

Add the dumplings to the pot and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until they float to the surface.

Serve the beef and dumplings hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
