Smoked Herring Gratin
A traditional German-inspired dish with a twist, featuring smoked herring in a rich gratin.
Ingredients
- β1 fillet Smoked herringFresh or canned is fine
- β1 loaf Portuguese breadFor croutons
- β1 cup Welcoming cheese blendA mix of cheddar, parmesan, and gouda
- β1 medium OnionThinly sliced
- β3 cloves GarlicMinced
- βto taste Salt
- βto taste Black pepper
- β2 large EggsBeaten
- β1 cup MilkWhole or 2%
- β2 tbsp ButterMelted

Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).

Slice the onion and separate into rings.

Crumb the Portuguese bread into small pieces and set aside.

In a separate bowl, mix the welcoming cheese blend, eggs, and milk.

Grease a baking dish with butter.

Add a layer of sliced onion, followed by a layer of smoked herring.

Sprinkle crumbled bread over the herring, then pour the cheese mixture over.

Repeat the layers one more time, ending with a layer of cheese on top.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the gratin is heated through.
