Venezuelan Corn Arepas
A delicious vegan twist on traditional Venezuelan street food. Crispy corn arepas filled with sautéed vegetables and served with a side of warm flatbread.
Ingredients
- ●2 cups cornmealpreferably venezuelan cornmeal
- ●1 cup water
- ●4 warm flatbread
- ●2 tbsp nutty sesame seedsoptional
- ●1 tsp vegan oil
- ●1/2 cup onionchopped
- ●1/2 cup bell pepperchopped

Combine cornmeal and water in a bowl. Mix well and let rest for 10 minutes.

Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and flatten slightly.

Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Cook the arepas for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until crispy and golden.

While the arepas are cooking, heat the vegan oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper and sauté until softened.

Once the arepas are done, split them open and fill with the sautéed vegetables. Sprinkle with nutty sesame seeds if using.

Serve the arepas with a side of warm flatbread and enjoy.
