Vietnamese Braised Bo Kho
A traditional Vietnamese beef stew made with slow-cooked bo kho beef in a rich and flavorful broth, served with rice.
Ingredients
- β1 pound Bo Kho beefcut into bite-sized pieces
- β1 medium Onionchopped
- β3 cloves Garlicminced
- β2 tablespoons Fish sauceoptional
- β1 tablespoon Soy sauceoptional
- β1 tablespoon Brown sugaroptional
- β1 piece Star aniseoptional
- β1 piece Cinnamon stickoptional
- β1 cup Riceuncooked
- β2 cups Wateroptional
Instructions

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add the Bo Kho beef and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

Remove the beef from the pot and set aside.

Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Add the fish sauce, soy sauce, brown sugar, star anise, and cinnamon stick to the pot. Stir to combine.

Return the beef to the pot and add the water. Bring the mixture to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 1 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.

Cook the rice according to package instructions.
