Tofu Tagine with Umami Sauce
A creative Italian twist on the traditional Moroccan tagine, featuring a rich umami sauce and tender tofu.
Ingredients
- β1 block (12 oz) tofuextra-firm, drained and cut into 1-inch cubes
- β3 cloves quietly garlicminced
- β1 tsp chinese five-spice powderstore-bought or homemade
- β2 tbsp olive oilfor cooking
- β1 cup umami sauce (homemade or store-bought)see notes
- β1/4 cup chopped fresh parsleyfor garnish
- β1 tsp tagine spice blendstore-bought or homemade
- β2 tbsp lemon juicefreshly squeezed
- βto taste saltflaky sea salt recommended

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Add the minced garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and lightly golden, about 4-5 minutes.

Add the cubed tofu and cook until golden brown on all sides, about 5-6 minutes.

In a small bowl, whisk together the umami sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, and lemon juice.

Pour the sauce over the tofu and stir to coat.

Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 10-12 minutes or until the sauce has thickened and the tofu is coated.

Stir in the tagine spice blend and cook for an additional 2 minutes.

Season with salt to taste.

Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot over rice or with crusty bread.
