German Braised Fennel with Egyptian Spices
A hearty and flavorful German dish featuring fennel as the main ingredient, slow-cooked in a tagine.
Ingredients
- β1 large fennel
- β2 tsp egyptian spice blend
- β1 large piquant onions
- β1 sheet, thawed flaky pastry
- β2 tbsp olive oil
- βto taste salt
- βto taste black pepper
Instructions

Preheat oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).

Trim the fennel and slice it into 1/4-inch thick wedges.

Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat.

Add the onions and cook until they're softened and lightly browned.

Add the Egyptian spice blend and cook for 1 minute.

Add the fennel wedges and toss to coat with the spice mixture.

Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven.

Bake for 30 minutes, or until the fennel is tender.

Remove the pot from the oven and let it cool slightly.

Roll out the flaky pastry on a lightly floured surface.

Cut the pastry into 4 equal pieces and place each piece on top of the fennel.

Return the pot to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.
