Slovakian-Style Pork Casserole
A hearty, comforting casserole made with slow-cooked pork and topped with a crispy breadcrumb mixture.
Ingredients
- β1.5 pounds pork shoulder
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β3 cloves garlicminced
- β2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- β1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- β1 teaspoon salt
- β1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- β1 cup old-fashioned breadcrumbs
- β2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- 1
Preheat oven to 300Β°F (150Β°C).
- 2
Season the pork shoulder with salt, black pepper, and caraway seeds.
- 3
In a large Dutch oven, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Sear the pork shoulder until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.
- 4
Remove the pork from the pot and set aside. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- 5
Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- 6
Add the flour and cook for 1 minute.
- 7
Gradually add the pork broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
- 8
Return the pork shoulder to the pot and bring the mixture to a boil.
- 9
Cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven.
- 10
Bake for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until the pork is tender and falls apart easily.
- 11
Transfer the pork to a cutting board and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
- 12
Meanwhile, mix the breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the top of the pork casserole.
- 13
Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
