Traditional English Trifle
A classic English dessert made with layers of sponge cake, fruit, custard, and whipped cream.
Ingredients
- β1 (12 oz) package Sponge cake
- β2 cups Mixed berries
- β1 cup Custard
- β1 cup Heavy cream
- β2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
- β2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
- β1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- β1/4 cup Sherry (optional)
- β1 cup Candied fruit (optional)
Instructions

Cut the sponge cake into 1-inch cubes.

In a large bowl, combine the mixed berries and granulated sugar.

In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

Split the vanilla pod lengthwise and scrape the seeds into the custard.

In a separate saucepan, heat the custard over low heat until warmed through.

To assemble the trifle, begin with a layer of sponge cake cubes in the bottom of a large serving dish.

Next, add a layer of mixed berries, followed by a layer of custard.

Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of whipped cream on top.

If using, sprinkle a layer of candied fruit on top of the whipped cream.

If using, drizzle a layer of sherry over the top of the trifle.

Refrigerate the trifle for at least 30 minutes before serving.
