Steamed Lentil Dal
A simple and nutritious Indian-inspired dish made with lentils and spices.
Ingredients
- β1 cup lentilsDutch or brown lentils work well
- β1/2 cup dalSplit red or yellow lentils
- β4 cups waterFor steaming
- β1 medium onionChopped
- β1-inch piece gingerGrated
- β1 teaspoon cumin seedsWhole or ground
- β1/2 teaspoon turmericGround
- βto taste saltOptional
- β steaming basketFor steaming lentils
Instructions

Rinse the lentils and dal, and soak them in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.

In a large pan, heat some water over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.

Add the chopped onion and grated ginger to the pan. Cook until the onion is translucent.

Add the turmeric and salt (if using) to the pan. Stir well.

Add the lentils and dal to the pan, and stir to combine.

Transfer the mixture to a steaming basket, and steam over boiling water for 20-25 minutes.

Check the lentils for doneness. They should be tender but still hold their shape.

Serve the steamed lentil dal hot, garnished with chopped cilantro (if desired).
