Crispy Ethiopian Chickpea Fritters
A crunchy and flavorful appetizer inspired by Ethiopian cuisine, made with chickpeas, spices, and crispy batter.
Ingredients
- β1 can chickpeasdrained and rinsed
- β1 cup all-purpose flourfor crispy coating
- β1 medium bitter gourdgrated
- β1 small onionfinely chopped
- β2 cloves garlicminced
- β1 tsp cuminground
- β1 tsp corianderground
- β1 tsp crispy spice blendoptional
- βfor frying vegetable oil
- βto taste salt
- βto taste black pepper

Preheat the oil in a deep frying pan to 350Β°F (180Β°C).

In a large bowl, mash the chickpeas using a fork or a potato masher.

Add the grated bitter gourd, chopped onion, minced garlic, ground cumin, ground coriander, and crispy spice blend (if using) to the bowl with the chickpeas. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, mix the flour and a pinch of salt. Gradually add the flour mixture to the chickpea mixture and mix until a thick batter forms.

Using a spoon, drop small balls of the batter into the hot oil, about 1/4 cup each. Fry the fritters in batches until they are golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serve the crispy Ethiopian chickpea fritters hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
